Hi,

I am a university student and i am trying to gather some info so as to
carry out a work i have to do. The subject of my work is "High Speed Hard
turning using CBN Tools ".
I have gathered some info about "hard turning" and "high speed turning"
separetely but not much info that refers to the both which i am interested
about so as to find the advantages of this new combination process.
Is there any spesific site or book-paper or anything you know about this
subject that you can help? I would be gratefull for any help.

Thank you.

If you don't get better answers here, Google provides 266 hits
with the search phrase:
CBN "hard turning" highspeed OR "high speed"

George,

You could try writing directly to the manufacturer of such inserts and I
believe, they should be quite pleased to give you access to reading
material. Try SECO of sweden for some information

Modern Machine Shop magazine. They have articles available on their web
site.

Here is a paper

Another interesting area is vibration assisted hard turning. Check out
these links:

One of the problems with CBN tools is there is a limit to the surface
finish that you can attain due to the grain size of the CBN. If you could
use a single monocrystaline tool such as a natural diamond to turn hard
steel then the surface finish issue goes away. It would be possible to
machine mirror surfaces. The problem is that there is a chemical affinity
between the diamond and the carbon in the steel. So tool life is very
poor. Vibration assisted turning shows some promise at solving the tool
life problem. I have also seen a live demonstration of vibration assisted
hard machining by a company in Japan. They were able to use ordinary
carbide and get good tool life.

You should also think about how to address the workholding issue. The
main problem with high speed turning of any type is that centrifugal
force acts to open the chuck. The issue with hard turning is being able
to hold the work tightly enough without deforming it. Combine the two and
you have a real challenge. There has been some research done using
rotating turning tools and a fixed workpiece.

CBN Tools
Go to the Web Sites of their makers.
BTW, Why limit to CBN?
